Summary-
When sixteen-year-old Amal decides to wear the
hijab full-time, her entire world changes, all because of a piece of cloth...Sixteen-year-old
Amal makes the decision to start wearing the hijab full-time and everyone has a
reaction. Her parents, her teachers, her friends, people on the street. But she
stands by her decision to embrace her faith and all that it is, even if it does
make her a little different from everyone else. Can she handle the taunts of "towel head,"
the prejudice of her classmates, and still attract the cutest boy in school?
Critical
Analysis-
The protagonist in the
story, Amal, is a 16-year-old Australian-Palestinian-Muslim girl who makes the
decision to wear the hijab full-time, covering her hair as an expression of her
religious beliefs. This decision raises questions of identity and challenges
societal norms. The novel explores the complexities of multiculturalism and the
struggles of balancing one's cultural heritage with the desire for
assimilation. It examines the challenges faced by people from diverse
backgrounds, particularly Muslims, in navigating their identity within a
predominantly Western culture. The book sheds light on the experiences of
Muslim teenagers, highlighting their struggles, triumphs, and the prejudice
they face in their daily lives. Religion plays a central role in the novel. The
book delves into Amal’s personal journey of faith, commitment to Islam and the
challenges she faces in adhering to her beliefs while living in a society where
Islam is often misunderstood. It also showcases the diversity within the Muslim
community itself, as Amal interacts with individuals who have different levels
of religious observance. "Does My Head Look Big In This?" also addresses
gender dynamics within the Muslim community. Amal challenges traditional gender
roles and expectations, asserting her individuality. The novel examines different
ways in which women can navigate their faith and cultural expectations while
pursuing their own aspirations. The most interesting part of the story to me was
the multifaceted identity of Amal, as a Muslim woman of Palestinian heritage
living in Australia. She faces unique challenges due to the overlapping factors
of race, religion, and gender. By highlighting these intersecting identities,
the book sheds light on the diverse experiences within the Muslim community and
encourages a deeper understanding of the complexities of identity.
