Social Media
In 2004, when Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook, social media quickly became the most popular form of communication. Everyone loved the fastest way to find out what their friends and acquaintances were doing. Unfortunately, in 2023, there are many more social media platforms to keep people connected. Facebook seems to have lost it's novelty, and users are using Instagram and Twitter predominately. The Gen Z population equates Facebook with outdated communication. The main advantages of Facebook are that it is great for businesses and marketing since it is one of the world's largest social media networks and is an easy way to build a brand. Another advantage is that information is easily shared by simply posting a link, no special software needed. There are a few disadvantages, such as privacy issues. Facebook has a history of violating users privacy. Users also have an increase risk of identity theft, due to the easy accessibility of personal information. I follow some middle school libraries on FB to get ideas for programming, author visits, and to browse questions they post and read feedback from other librarians.
I find that Instagram is a more user friendly social media platform. As a librarian, I would use my page to showcase student's work and creations completed in the library, such as Makerspace challenge creations. Capturing memories from an event such as an author visit or new ideas from a conference are other creative ways I would use Instagram. Sharing reading recommendations with students is another way Instagram can be useful. Here are some examples of how I organize and collect ideas for my library using Instagram posts and reels.

Finally, Twitter is another social media platform that I recently started exploring. I like that there is a character limit, to keep tweets shorter than IG and FB posts. It is a platform to easily connect with like minded, individuals, who are all learning and sharing information about new technologies and developments. I also love to get ideas from other libraries, such as Slauson Library, for new ideas and monthly programming for the library.
School Library Journal posts about new books being published, as well as tips and studies done that relate to library topics. This quick link gives simple and easy strategies to boost student literacy.
I love everything about this tweet from Upstate Golisano, about a "Readiatrician" and how she uses books as a diagnostic tool to check babies and children's development.
Hi Lindsay, I agree that Instragram is definitely user friendly and way easier to reach your target audience as well. I just saw that tweet from Upstate Golisano about being a "Readatrician," and what an awesome way to describe what she does! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThe idea you have of using Instagram to promote library events sounds so fun! Showcasing student work will go a long way as well. When students see their creations being advertised and shown with pride, they will feel more invested in the library program.
